Modesto driver accused of rollover DUI crash that killed passenger, CHP says
A driver suspected of DUI is in custody after a crash that left a passenger dead, the California Highway Patrol Modesto division said.Michael Anthony Smith, 39, of Modesto, is facing felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter charges in connection with the crash, CHP said. Smith is believed to have been driving southbound on Santa Fe Avenue, south of Claus Road, when he went off the road and caused the vehicle to roll over multiple times.CHP said emergency personnel who responded to the crash after 4:55 a.m. found a Honda sedan with major damage from the crash. The rear left passenger had died at the scene, and two other passengers were taken to the Memorial Medical Center with minor to moderate injuries.Officials have not yet identified the passenger, only stating that she is female. Details were also not released on whether everyone had their seat belts on.Smith was not injured, and CHP said he "displayed objective signs of being under the influence." He was taken to the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center.See news happening?
