Milwaukee man charged after fleeing fatal crash twice

A Milwaukee man is facing charges for his involvement in a deadly double hit-and-run crash. The crash happened near 22nd and National Avenue in Milwaukee on the night of July 7.Authorities arrested a 46-year-old Travis Doss on July 8 in connection with the fatal hit-and-run. Prosecutors say Travis Doss was the first driver to hit Troy Lewek. A second car then struck Lewek a few seconds later.According to the criminal complaint, as Troy Joseph Lewek was walking across the street toward a parked vehicle. A dark four-door sedan struck him.The impact threw Lewek onto the hood of the car before he bounced off and landed motionless in the roadway. The driver of the sedan did not stop, instead continuing eastbound before turning down a side street.Court documents say a resident reported hearing a “loud thud” and went outside to investigate. Bystanders gathered on the sidewalk urged the resident to call 911 after seeing Lewek unresponsive in the road.Approximately 19 seconds after the initial impact, a second vehicle, identified in a court document as a two-door Chevrolet Monte Carlo, struck Lewek as he lay in the street.About a minute and a half later, the sedan returned to the scene, paused briefly, and drove away again, the complaint says. Emergency responders arrived shortly after and attempted life-saving measures, but Lewek was pronounced dead at 10:55 p.m.Traffic Cameras Lead to ArrestInvestigators say they used traffic cameras to identify the first striking vehicle as a 2004 maroon Mercury Grand Marquis. Court documents say that the following afternoon, police located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop.The driver and sole occupant, Doss, told authorities he owned the car and was the only person who drove it. He was subsequently taken into custody.Suspect Confesses to FleeingAccording to the criminal complaint, during an interview with authorities, Doss admitted to driving the vehicle and striking a man in the road the previous night. He said that upon impact, the pedestrian flew into the air and onto his windshield.Doss told investigators he drove around the block and returned to the scene, claiming he thought the victim was moving slightly, He then parked on a nearby side street because he was scared. From that vantage point, he watched emergency medical services and police arrive.Afterward, Doss left the area and spoke with his wife about whether he should call the police or turn himself in. He ultimately decided against it, telling authorities he thought it would not make a difference at that point.
