Mass. man arrested after high-speed, multi-town chase ends in crash, NH police say

An 18-year-old Stoneham, Massachusetts, man faces a series of charges after police in New Hampshire said he fled a traffic stop, leading to a high-speed pursuit that ended in a crash on Interstate 95. At around 12:30 a.m. Monday, a New Hampshire State trooper saw a 2014 Chrysler 300 traveling at 118 mph on I-95 in Greenland. When the trooper attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver fled, and a pursuit was initiated, New Hampshire State Police said. The Chrysler continued onto Route 101 at the Hampton Side Toll Plaza and continued through Hampton and Exeter. The car crashed at Exit 11 in Stratham when the driver lost control and collided with a retaining wall at the base of the Route 101 overpass.The driver, identified as Jason A. Schalebaum, 18, "displayed signs of impairment," New Hampshire State Police said. Schalebaum was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries before he was taken to Rockingham County Jail.Schalebaum was charged with multiple counts of felony reckless conduct with a deadly weapon and misdemeanor counts of aggravated driving under the influence, disobeying an officer, conduct after an accident and possession of controlled drugs. He is expected to be arraigned on Monday in Brentwood District Court.New Hampshire State Police said Schalebaum also failed to stop for Maine State Police about five minutes before he was seen in Greenland.
