Man still hospitalized after I-264 crash in Norfolk
NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A man is still in the hospital recovering from injuries suffered a week after trying to help others who were involved in a two-car crash on westbound Interstate 264 at Military Highway in Norfolk just after 11 p.m. Friday, June 26. James Moody, 25, was driving home on I-264 and stopped to check on the crash when he was struck while walking to the site by another driver trying to avoid the crashed vehicles. "James is a helpful person," said his mother, Demetria Edwards. "James always tries to help no matter what the situation. He's a giving person. He's a helpful person. That's how he was raised." James Moody's older brother, Dominique Moody, went to the scene and took photos of the crash, which is now being investigated by the Virginia State Police. Edwards received alerts on her phone. "I received the S.O.S. message on my phone, and I responded that way," Edwards said. "The first message stated he was involved in an accident, and the next message stated that he was being transported to a hospital." Moody is a correctional officer at St. Brides Correctional Center and has been at the hospital in the intensive care unit since the crash. His injuries are extensive including a broken femur, broken pelvis, neck, and spinal injuries. The driver of the vehicle that hit Moody, Xavier Taylor, 31, of Belleville, Illinois, has been charged with driving under the influence and driving under the influence-maiming. "I wish he had made better choices," Edwards said, "because due to his negligence, my son is suffering and fighting for his life, and it's not fair." James Moody remains in the intensive care unit, and a GoFundMe account has been set up by his family.
