Man killed, 3 injured in crash on I-69 in Grant County

GRANT COUNTY, Ind. — A Marion man was killed Tuesday while driving on I-69 in Grant County after two cars reportedly collided in the roadway. Three other people were injured. Grant County sheriff's deputies were called around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday to a vehicle crash on Interstate 69 northbound near mile-marker 272. Several callers reported that a car had flipped and that multiple people had been launched from their vehicles. Upon arrival, deputies found a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado truck and a 1996 Chevrolet truck that had crashed into each other, injuring multiple occupants. In total, police said three people were injured and one man was killed. That man, identified by police as Joseph A. Kidwell of Marion, was reportedly pronounced dead on scene. Kidwell was 45. The three injured occupants were taken to a Fort Wayne hospital for treatment to their various injuries. Later, detectives began interviewing witnesses and survivors to learn more about what led up to the crash. Preliminary information suggests that Kidwell and his wife were driving on I-69 northbound when their 1996 Chevy truck broke down. Kidwell's truck was reportedly parked on the side of the road when a 2011 Chevy truck swerved while attempting to pass a semi, eventually veering off the road and colliding with Kidwell's truck. The area of I-69 was partially shut down as investigators, deputies, medics and detectives worked to clear the scene. The investigation into the crash is ongoing, according to Sheriff Del Garcia.
