Man indicted on murder in fatal Cleveland crash
CLEVELAND (WJW) -- A Las Vegas man accused of stealing an SUV, then speeding away and causing a crash involving multiple vehicles that killed a 54-year-old man, is now facing murder charges. A Cuyahoga County grand jury on this week indicted Zayd Alameen, 22, of Las Vegas, on 12 felony counts and one misdemeanor count: The afternoon of April 24, Alameen allegedly stole an SUV whose owners had left the keys inside after parking along West 130th Street in Cleveland, according to a news release from the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office. Alameen, moving faster than 100 mph, drove to the intersection of Lorain Avenue and West 150th Street, where authorities said he struck another vehicle carrying three people -- all in their 20s -- and a second vehicle being driven by a 54-year-old man. The second vehicle then struck two other vehicles on Lorain Avenue before coming to a stop in the middle of the intersection, according to the release. "This defendant turned a stolen car into a missile and struck these innocent victims at 107 mph on Lorain Avenue during rush hour," Prosecutor Michael O'Malley is quoted in the release. "His conduct was beyond outrageous, and sadly, he cost one victim their life, devastating that family, and injured many others." Police arrested Alameen at the scene. The four people in the other vehicles were all transported to hospitals, according to the release. Firefighters freed one person who was trapped in a vehicle. The driver of the second vehicle, identified as James Cook, 54, of Fairview Park, was later pronounced dead. A 22-year-old woman also suffered broken bones, according to prosecutors. Alameen's bond was set at $50,000, or 10% cash or surety, at his arraignment on Monday, April 27, in Cleveland Municipal Court. He is set for indictment later, according to the release.
