Man in Kyle, South Dakota sentenced for deadly crash due to driving under the influence

A man from Kyle has been given a sentence of slightly less than four years for causing a deadly car accident due to driving under the influence. Kevin Hunter, 33, was sentenced on Monday, as stated in a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office, District of South Dakota. He had pleaded guilty on September 2, 2025. Hunter was driving his pickup at high speeds exceeding 80 mph while intoxicated on May 15, 2024. This resulted in a collision with a van, leading to the death of a passenger. Instead of seeking help, Hunter left the accident scene and provided false information about his whereabouts that night. During the sentencing, District Judge Camela Theeler highlighted Hunter's past DUI convictions and emphasized that a significant sentence was necessary to safeguard the community.
