Man from Gouverneur apprehended following police pursuit that concludes in collision.
A 45-year-old man from Gouverneur faces charges after he allegedly attempted to flee the scene of a single-car accident. The individual, identified as Jason Guinup, was arrested by the New York State Police for allegedly refusing to stop during a traffic stop and crashing into a tree on January 31. Guinup has been charged with seventh-degree possession of a controlled substance and third-degree unlawful evasion of a police officer in a motor vehicle. The incident occurred around 9:35 p.m. within the village of Gouverneur when troopers tried to halt Guinup's 2008 Chevrolet on Factory Street for a traffic violation. He reportedly did not stop, initiating a pursuit by law enforcement. Guinup supposedly lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speed, striking various objects before attempting to flee on foot. He was later captured by troopers after a brief chase. Guinup was then taken to Gouverneur Hospital for assessment before being processed at the state police barracks in Gouverneur. An inquiry revealed that Guinup had an outstanding bench warrant at the time of the incident. He appeared in Gouverneur Court for the evasion charges and subsequently in Fowler Court for the active warrant. Guinup was ultimately released on his own recognizance by both courts following the arraignments.
