Man dies in Johnston County car crash along I-40, NCSHP says
SMITHFIELD, N.C. (WNCN) — A deadly crash on Friday evening killed a man along Interstate 40, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said. According to the NCSHP, troopers responded to a call about a crash on I-40 near mile marker 328. When troopers arrived, they found that a Ford Ranger and a Ford SUV had been in a crash. Investigators determined the Ford Ranger was being driven by a 17-year-old and had a passenger, identified as a 56-year-old Jarin Brent Cull. The SUV was driven by a 25-year-old. NCSHP said during the investigation, they determined the Ford Ranger was attempting to merge from the center lane into the right lane where the SUV was. When the Ranger tried to merge, it struck the SUV, causing the Ranger to lose control, overturn and crash into the median. The 17-year-old driver was taken to WakeMed by EMS, and according to NCSHP, Cull was pronounced dead shortly after being pulled from the vehicle. The 17-year-old is being charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and failure to maintain lane control. No other information was given by the NCSHP.
