Man detained for lethal hit-and-run in Aurora after witness confrontation

A tragic incident unfolded when a man lost his life, a one-year-old is currently hospitalized, and another man has been arrested by the Aurora police for causing the crash and attempting to flee the scene. The collision occurred on Friday night at around 8 p.m. in the vicinity of East 13th Avenue and North Peoria Street near Nome Park. Witnesses observed the crash and one individual attempted to approach the responsible party, who then attempted to escape. Law enforcement was alerted by the witness who dialed 911, prompting Aurora police to deploy a drone equipped with a thermal camera to search the area. Utilizing the drone's technology in the darkness, officers were able to track the suspect's heat signature. Subsequently, officers and a police dog were able to apprehend the suspect, identified as 19-year-old Jonathon Garcia. Investigations revealed that Garcia was spotted by witnesses and security cameras driving a Chevrolet Trailblazer and reportedly ran a red light, colliding with a Volvo at the intersection. The Volvo driver succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital, while the infant passenger from the Volvo remains in serious condition at the hospital. Investigators suspect that Garcia was under the influence of drugs and possibly alcohol during the incident. He is currently in custody with no bond on charges including reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, and vehicular homicide. Garcia is scheduled to appear in court on Saturday afternoon.
