Man dead, 2 hospitalized in suspected DUI, high-speed Las Vegas crash

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- A man is dead, and two women were hospitalized after a suspected DUI crash in the central Las Vegas valley early Saturday morning. Around 5:35 a.m., Metro police responded to a report of a crash at the intersection of East Washington Avenue and North Bruce Street. Evidence at the scene, witness statements and surveillance footage showed that a 1993 Nissan truck was driving westbound on Washington Avenue, approaching a fresh yellow light in the left turn lane. The Nissan entered the intersection at the same time a 2015 Ford Mustang was driving eastbound on Washington Avenue, approaching a yellow light at the intersection at an "excessive speed," police said. The crash occurred when the driver of the Ford failed to decrease speed and entered the intersection at a high rate of speed as the light turned red. The Ford crashed into the side of the Nissan, causing the driver of the Nissan to be ejected, according to Metro police. The 49-year-old driver of the Nissan succumbed to his injuries as was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Ford, identified as 21-year-old Maria Gonzalez-Medina, was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police said Gonzalez-Medina showed signs of impairment and was arrested and booked in absentia on DUI and reckless driving-related charges. The passenger of the Ford was taken to the hospital where she is in critical condition, police said. The Nissan driver's death marked the 48th traffic-related fatality in LVMPD's jurisdiction for 2026.
