Man credited with rescuing 4 people following fiery fatal crash in Ontario County

Canandaigua, N.Y. — Ontario County Sheriff David Cirencione called Wednesday's fatal crash in Naples "one of the most horrific scenes I've seen in several years" but said it could have been more tragic if not for a man's heroic actions. BACKGROUND: 71-year-old man and 2 dogs killed, 5 other people injured in Ontario County crash Cirencione said a northbound SUV — driven by Morgan Gliedman, 40, of Fremont, Steuben County — swerved abruptly into the oncoming lane on County Road 12 at 3:42 p.m., striking a southbound pickup truck that was towing a fifth-wheel camper. A southbound SUV then crashed into the camper. The collision caused Gliedman's SUV to roll over. The pickup truck caught fire immediately, trapping the driver, 71-year-old Brian Johnson of Naples, who died at the scene. Cirencione said the fire extended to Gliedman's SUV. The driver of the southbound SUV — Luke Spara, 34, of Perinton — pulled Gliedman and her two children from their vehicle and helped Johnson's wife escape the burning pickup truck. "He was very shaken and very much trying to process the magnitude of what he had just witnessed and been a part of," Cirencione said during a press conference Thursday. Johnson's two dogs also died at the scene. Cirencione said Johnson's wife was in guarded condition at Strong Memorial Hospital. Johnson's cause of death was still being determined. Gliedman underwent surgery Wednesday and needed another Thursday, Cirencione said. She was also in guarded condition at Strong. Cirencione said Gliedman's 6-year-old son was initially reported to have minor injuries, but further evaluation found he heard serious internal injuries. He underwent surgery Wednesday night and was in guarded condition at Strong. Gliedman's 8-month-old child was uninjured and released from the hospital. Spara, who suffered a minor laceration, was on his way to help a friend with a dock in Naples when the crash happened and he sprang into action, Cirencione said. "Had it not been for Mr. Spara, there's no doubt in our minds all five people would have died in this crash," Cirencione said. "He singlehandedly extricated the Gliedman family and had a big part in extricating Ms. Johnson as that fire raged on." The crash remains under investigation.
