Man charged after multi-vehicle crash on Independence Boulevard and Holland Road in Virginia Beach

(WAVY) -- The Virginia State Police (VSP) arrested a man after a multi-vehicle crash in the intersection of Independence Boulevard and Holland Road in Virginia Beach Sunday morning, according to VSP. At around 12:29 a.m. on March 8, a trooper noticed a Ram 1500 truck that had eluded Virginia Beach Police. The Ram accelerated after passing the trooper's vehicle. The suspect then exited I-264 through Independence Boulevard and continued accelerating. The trooper attempted a traffic stop at the intersection of Independence Boulevard and South Plaza Trail, but the suspect sped away. The suspect ran a red light at the intersection of Independence Boulevard and Holland Road, striking a red Mazda Sedan and a Honda Accord. The suspect has been identified as New Mexico resident Leon A. Pena. After the crash, he was taken to a local hospital for treatment. He now faces charges that include driving while intoxicated and eluding. The Mazda's driver, Norfolk resident Naomi Kiesow, was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. The Honda's driver, Philadelphia resident Gavin Rodriguez, was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. According to a post from the department on Facebook, the intersection was closed due to the crash. The department advises the community to avoid the area and use alternative routes at this time. When the intersection will reopen is currently unknown. The crash is still under investigation.
