Man arrested, one injured after suspected drunk driving crash in Elkhart

A man is behind bars after a suspected drunk driving crash sent one to the hospital early Sunday morning in Elkhart. It happened shortly after 1 a.m. near the intersection of Bower Street and North Riverside Drive, just west of the river. Elkhart Police say an initial investigation shows the 20-year-old had hit the Sherman Street bridge. It is unclear whether the passenger was thrown from the vehicle, or if he was getting out of the vehicle at the time of the crash. The passenger was sent to the hospital with a head injury, and was in stable condition at last check. The driver was arrested and booked into the Elkhart County Jail, where he faces preliminary charges of Leaving the Scene of an Accident, Operating While Intoxicated, and Minor Consuming Alcohol.
