Man arrested at workplace 1 year after deadly crash in Clark County

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A 46-year-old man was arrested Friday morning in connection with a fatal crash that took place in 2025. Michael T. Smith, 46, was booked into the Clark County Jail and charged with vehicular homicide and vehicular assault. The arrest stems from a two-car crash on March 19, 2025, around 2:15 p.m. near the 100 block of SW 20th Avenue. Officials say Smith was evaluated at the scene and was relatively unharmed. However, the two occupants of the other vehicle, a Kia Soul, were significantly injured. The male passenger died a little more than an hour after the crash, while the female driver survived despite suffering severe injuries. "Due to the severity of the injuries resulting from the collision, deputies from the Clark County Sheriff’s Office and the Vancouver Police Department Traffic Units were brought in to assist with the investigation. Collision analysis determined that Smith’s vehicle was traveling significantly above the posted speed limit when it struck the Kia as it entered SW 20th Avenue from a private driveway," Battle Ground Police said. Authorities say they received lab results from an analysis of a blood sample from Smith, which was taken at the scene. The sample gave officials probable cause for the arrest, police said. "Smith was contacted at his place of employment in the Hazel Dell area and taken into custody without incident," police said.
