Man and child killed after alleged DWI driver causes multi-car crash in North Carolina: SHP

CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- A man is facing several charges after a man and a child were killed in a drunk driving crash, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP). Troopers responded around 8:46 p.m. on Friday, April 17, to the crash on U.S. 64 at Union Baptist Road in Caldwell County. Officials say a 2018 Ford F-150 was driving east on U.S. 64, crossed over the centerline and crashed into a 2006 Honda Civic. The F-150 then ran off the road and hit a guardrail and a utility pole. The driver of the F-150 then ran away on foot. After the crash, the Honda was left sitting sideways in the road, where it was then hit by a 2015 Ford F-250 driving west on U.S. 64. The driver of the F-250, a 22-year-old man from Lenoir, was not hurt. The driver of the Honda, 78-year-old Pink Grant Lackey, of Lenoir, and the front-seat passenger of the Honda, an 11-year-old juvenile of Lenoir, both died from their injuries at the site of the crash. The driver of the Ford F-150, 20-year-old Matthew Braden Frye, of Hickory, was arrested in the woods by troopers. He was not hurt. Investigators say that both speed and impairment led to the crash. Frye is charged with: More charges are pending review by the District Attorney's Office. The crash shut down U.S.64 for several hours.
