Man accused of causing Southbury bus crash that ejected 2 students, injured others

SOUTHBURY, Conn. (WTNH) -- A Southbury man has been charged in connection with a Region 14 school bus crash that ejected two students and injured others Wednesday afternoon. Richard Estey, 65, was charged with driving under the influence and failure to obey a traffic signal. He was released on a $25,000 bond. Police said around 2:30 p.m., a Region 14 school bus transporting eight students and two adults on Southford Road (Route 67) was struck by a vehicle allegedly operated by Estey. Two students were ejected from that bus, and multiple other people were injured due to the crash, according to police. Several people were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and are in stable condition. The bus crash involved Nonnewaug High School students from Prospect and Beacon Falls, Region 14 school officials said in a statement to the community. Some of the students sustained serious injuries and were treated at St. Mary's and Waterbury Hospital, school officials said. Several other students and the driver were sent to the hospital out of an abundance of caution. Counseling services will be available at Nonnewaug High School Thursday starting at 7:10 a.m., school officials said. The investigation remains ongoing.
