Man accused in fatal Navajo Nation parade crash: prosecutors
Navajo Nation officials confirmed on Dec. 24 that a man has been charged following a tragic crash at a holiday parade within the Native American community. Stanley Begay Jr., aged 67, faces charges of Homicide by Vehicle in connection with the incident that occurred during the Kayenta Light Parade on Dec. 22. Reportedly, Begay drove into the parade route before the event began, hitting four people waiting there. Tragically, one of the victims, a three-year-old Navajo child, lost their life due to injuries sustained. A GoFundMe has been set up for the child's family. Navajo Nation authorities collaborated with various law enforcement agencies to bring forth the charge before the holiday recess. Due to the limitations set by the Indian Civil Rights Act, the maximum penalty for Homicide by Vehicle under Navajo law is a year in jail and a $5,000 fine. Chief Prosecutor Vernon L. Jackson, Sr. emphasized that a conviction in Navajo Nation District Court carries meaningful consequences under tribal law. Begay's arraignment is scheduled for Jan. 13, 2026. The Indian Civil Rights Act places certain restrictions on tribal governments, such as the maximum one-year prison sentence and $5,000 fine. The "enhanced sentencing authority under the Tribal Law and Order Act of 2010" refers to an amendment to the Indian Civil Rights Act that allows for longer prison terms and increased fines in specific cases, not exceeding three years in jail or $15,000 in fines.
