Major I-85 crash in Orange County backs up traffic for miles; slowdowns in Durham County

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. (WNCN) -- A multi-car crash on Interstate 85 in Orange County near Durham County closed both lanes of traffic for nearly two hours and backed up traffic about two miles on Saturday afternoon. The wreck was reported around 2 p.m. along I-85 north near mile marker 170 near U.S. 70, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation. Initial reports indicated a tractor-trailer and three other vehicles were involved in the crash between mile markers 169 and 170. After both lanes were blocked for most of the time after the crash, one lane in the area reopened around 3:40 p.m. and both lanes were back open just before 4 p.m. Traffic in northbound lanes was backed up past mile marker 168, while southbound traffic was backed up about a mile into Durham County. There was no word about injuries in the wreck. The North Carolina Department of Transportation said the highway should be clear by 4 p.m. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating.
