Major accident early Monday morning shuts down part of West Irving Park road on city’s North Side
CHICAGO — A major accident in Irving Park on the city's North Side early Monday morning has closed West Irving Park Road between North Kimball Avenue and North Spaulding Avenue as the morning commute got underway. The Chicago Transit Authority is temporarily re-routing No. 80 Irving Park buses in both directions due to the road closure. According to Chicago police, a light-colored Kia sedan being driven by a 34-year-old woman with two passengers was going west in the 3300 block of W. Irving Park Rd. around 3 a.m. when it tried to get into the right lane and hit a light-colored Volkswagen sedan going in the same direction. Police say the Kia then hit a nearby tree, while the Volkswagen hit a residential building. The driver of the Volkswagen then fled the scene in an unknown direction. The woman driving the Kia was taken to an area hospital in critical condition, police say, while a 38-year-old male passenger was taken to an area hospital in good condition with cuts on his body and a 26-year-old male passenger refused medical treatment at the scene. No citations have been issued at this time, and the Major Accidents Unit is investigating.
