Late-night Upstate crash kills 16-year-old, injures 2 others
A teenager has died and two others are hurt after a crash in Anderson County, according to officials.Anderson County 911 received a call about a crash just before 12:30 a.m. Monday morning on Five Forks Road near Pearman Drive. According to officials, a 2014 BMW sedan was coming out of a curve on Five Forks Road when it went off the road to the right, hit a mailbox, ditch, then a tree. One teenager was killed, and two others were taken to the hospital.The coroner's office identified the victim as 16-year-old Spencer James Martin from Anderson.Preliminary investigation shows that the victim was a passenger in the front seat.South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating with assistance from the Piercetown Fire Department and the Anderson County Coroner's Office.Memorial Day weekend marked the start of the "100 deadliest days" on the roads, a period between Memorial Day and Labor Day that sees a spike in fatal teen crashes nationwide. Last week, safety officials encouraged safe driving practices ahead of this deadly period of summer.
