Jury selection begins for man accused of causing fatal crash

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) -- Jury selection is underway in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court for a North Carolina man accused of causing a fatal crash last April in Coitsville. Robert Powell, 25, is on trial before Judge Anthony Donofrio on charges of aggravated vehicular homicide, a second-degree felony; improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, a fifth-degree felony; and operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, a first-degree misdemeanor. The OVI charges includes a specification that it is Powell's second OVI offense. Powell is accused of causing a crash about 7 p.m. April 10, 2025, that took the life of John Kulnis, 62, of New Castle, Pennsylvania. A crash report said that Powell is accused of failing to yield the right of way at U.S. 422 and North Hubbard Road, which caused the vehicle he was driving to collide with the vehicle Kulnis was driving. Kulnis died at St. Elizabeth Health Center. A grand jury indicted Powell in June 2025. He has been free on $100,000 bond.
