Judge chooses not to set bond for man accused of killing teacher while fleeing ICE

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Bond was not set for the man accused of killing a Savannah teacher while fleeing from Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) in court Tuesday. A source told WSAV that Oscar Vasquez-Lopez had his first court appearance virtually Tuesday afternoon. According to a Chatham County Police Department (CCPD) spokesperson, Linda Davis was killed in the crash that happened before 7:45 a.m. Monday on Whitefield Avenue at the Truman Parkway intersection. Vasquez-Lopez, 38, was fleeing from ICE officers, made an illegal U-turn and ran a red light when he hit Davis’s car. According to a DHS spokesperson, Vasquez-Lopez is from Guatemala and was issued a final order of removal in 2024, though it’s unclear when or how he entered the U.S. Vasquez-Lopez’s defense said ICE was a running “paramilitary" unit, according to a source inside the courtroom. The judge ultimately did not to set bond. Vasquez-Lopez is charged with first-degree homicide by vehicle, reckless driving, driving without a valid license and failure to obey a traffic control device.
