Jesup boy undergoes brain surgery following playground accident
WAYNE COUNTY, Ga. — An 11-year-old Jesup boy is recovering after undergoing brain surgery this week, nearly two months after his family says a swing chain snapped at Cracker Williams Park, throwing him more than 20 feet and leaving him with a traumatic brain injury. Doctors say Braden Daniels suffered significant injuries in the April accident, and his family says he may still require additional treatment related to damage affecting his spinal cord. As they focus on his recovery, Braden's parents are also raising questions about whether the incident could have been prevented. For the Daniels family, the past two months have been filled with MRI scans, specialist appointments, and frequent trips between Jesup and Memorial Health in Savannah. With Braden's father currently unable to work because of a separate back injury, the family says the emotional and financial toll has been overwhelming. Now, they are sharing their son's story in hopes of preventing another family from experiencing a similar tragedy. According to Braden's parents, the accident happened during spring break while he was swinging at Cracker Williams Park. They say a chain suddenly snapped, sending him approximately 21 feet through the air. Initially, the family believed Braden had suffered a concussion. However, subsequent scans revealed a far more serious condition. "The best way I can explain it, the smaller part of his brain has slid down and is in the hole where his spinal cord goes through," said his mother, Hayden Daniels. "It's blocking all of the flow for his spinal fluid." The injury forced Braden out of school, off the baseball field, and away from many of the activities he enjoys most. His mother describes him as a kind, athletic child who was constantly on the move. "He's devastated," Hayden Daniels said. "He's really upset that he couldn't finish the baseball season. He didn't get to be with his friends the last two months of school." His father, Jordan Daniels, said the injury dramatically changed his son's personality and demeanor. "He went from a smiling kid to just staring at a wall and not talking to nobody," Jordan Daniels said. "And that ain't him." Over the following weeks, Braden underwent a CT scan, three MRI scans, specialist consultations, and numerous trips to Savannah for treatment. Then came the procedure his family had been dreading: brain surgery. This week, Braden underwent a lengthy operation that his parents say doctors believe was successful. Still, they know the recovery process is far from over. "Is he going to walk right again? Is he going to be able to talk right again?" Jordan Daniels said. "There are all these chances that he is not going to be the same kid that had to go under that knife." "We'll make sure that he gets whatever is needed, whatever therapy," Hayden Daniels added. "We will make sure." The family says medical bills continue to mount as Braden begins rehabilitation and ongoing treatment. To help cover expenses, they have turned to community support and a GoFundMe fundraiser. "The community has reached out with incredible support," Jordan Daniels said. "The prayers are what have gotten us through everything." While focused primarily on Braden's recovery, the family is also questioning whether the accident could have been avoided. They point to a 2018 planning document for Cracker Williams Park that identified maintenance concerns within the playground and recommended replacing aging equipment. "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure," Hayden Daniels said. "This very, very well could have been prevented." Today, new chains hang from the park's swing set. But for the Daniels family, the focus remains on helping Braden recover from injuries they say changed his life in an instant. "We just don't want to see one of our neighbors, one of our best friends, one of our church members' kids go through what my son had to go through," Jordan Daniels said. "It's life-changing, and it's been very detrimental to him." The family says Braden still faces a lengthy recovery and could require additional treatment related to spinal cord injuries. Requests for comment from city officials regarding the family's concerns about park maintenance had not been returned as of publication. Those interested in supporting Braden and his family can find information about fundraising efforts through the family's GoFundMe campaign.
