Interstate reopens following crash trapping driver under I-59 in Birmingham

All lanes of Interstate 59 in Birmingham are now open following a rescue operation that caused the shutdown of the southbound lanes for over an hour on Friday morning. The incident occurred near the I-459 interchange, resulting in traffic backups. Fire and rescue teams successfully utilized the Jaws of Life to extract a trapped driver from a pickup truck lodged under the I-59 overpass in the East Lake area. The driver had crashed his truck around 5 a.m. and became stuck between support beams on a concrete embankment near First Avenue North and 85th Street. Birmingham Fire and Rescue crews worked diligently both above and below the interstate to free the driver through the passenger side of the truck. Although the driver was seen moving within the cab, there is no update on their condition at this time.
