Impaired, wrong-way driver arrested in fatal crash near Walnut Creek
A person was killed and seven other people were injured after a woman drove a Dodge Charger the wrong way down Interstate 680 in Contra Costa County, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Contra Costa office. The office was advised of a wrong-way driver traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-680 just north of Route 242 around 11:20 p.m. on Friday. Minutes later, a responding unit observed a multi-vehicle crash just north of Treat Boulevard near Walnut Creek. A passenger in one of the vehicles was pronounced dead at the scene. Four others, including the wrong-way driver, sustained major injuries. Three others had minor injuries. One person had no injuries. The driver of the wrong-way vehicle was transported to a local hospital and was later determined to have been impaired at the time of the crash. She has been placed under arrest and remains at the hospital for treatment. All lanes of northbound I-680 are blocked until about 3:35 a.m.
