I-83 CLOSED BOTH WAYS: Helicopter responds to crash involving tractor-trailer in York County

One person was flown to the hospital after a "serious" crash on Interstate 83 in York County, according to PennDOT and the Shrewsbury Volunteer Fire Company. A tractor-trailer and an SUV collided in the southbound lanes near the PA Welcome Center in Shrewsbury Township at 4:49 a.m. Wednesday. The scene is near the Windy Hill Road overpass. PennDOT said a medical helicopter was called and airlifted one person from the SUV to the hospital. I-83 closedInterstate 83 southbound is closed between Exit 4, Route 851/Stewartstown, and the Maryland state line. Traffic is at a standstill near the crash scene. Crews are working to clean up the scene. There is no estimated time of reopening. The northbound lanes were also shut down but have since reopened. Surrounding roads in the area, including Main Street, which stretches from Shrewsbury Borough to Maryland, are experiencing delays. Pennsylvania State Police are investigating.
