I-81 reopened after major car crash in LaFayette injuring multiple people
Update: The number of vehicles involved in the accident has increased to 37. The incident occurred on Interstate-81 southbound in LaFayette and temporarily closed sections of the highway. Both lanes have since reopened. According to State troopers speaking to NewsChannel 9, the wreck involved 37 vehicles, which included three tractor-trailers. The initial collision involved 18 cars and further crashes led to the pile-up expanding. Some individuals have sustained broken bones, and around seven have been taken to hospitals for treatment, with no life-threatening injuries reported by police. The state police spokesperson attributed the crash to snowy conditions. Buses were deployed to transport unharmed individuals from the scene to the LaFayette Fire Department. The primary incident occurred slightly prior to 2:30 p.m., close to the weigh station near LaFayette on the southbound part of the interstate.
