I-75 Detroit Crash: Snow Squall Causes Pileup, 20+ Cars Removed, Freeway Reopens
Snow squall conditions caused a significant crash involving three semi-trucks and around 24 vehicles on I-75 in Detroit on Monday afternoon. The crash site on the northbound side of the freeway near McNichols has been cleared, and that section of the freeway is now open. State police believe that several smaller crashes may have contributed to the incident rather than one large pile-up. One driver, Cooper, who was involved in the chain of crashes, described the snow squall creating white-out conditions, leading to his car colliding with a semi-truck. The exact number of vehicles involved is currently unknown, but all lanes were blocked. Special towing vehicles were required for the semi-trucks, and emergency services and Michigan State Police were on the scene investigating. Road conditions were challenging throughout the day due to active winter weather, including strong winds and blinding snow squalls. Alternate routes were recommended, and power outages were reported by DTE Energy. Additionally, Metropolitan Airport in Romulus experienced delays and cancellations.
