I-540 crash with dump truck leaves driver hurt, eastbound lanes closed in Wake County: Police
KNIGHTDALE, N.C. (WNCN) — Troopers are investigating what led to a crash involving a dump truck that is set to have the eastbound lanes of Interstate 540 closed for hours. An alert sent by the North Carolina Department of Transportation around 1:20 p.m. notified drivers that I-540 East was closed at Knightdale Boulevard. According to the Knightdale Police Department, a dump truck spilled sand across all eastbound lanes on I-540. The driver was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. "The cause of the crash is under investigation," police told CBS 17. "We are estimating the eastbound portion of the roadway will be shut down for about 3 hours." NCDOT cameras showed officers redirecting traffic off of the highway to get on the Knightdale Boulevard/US-64 Business exit — just before the location of the crash. Congestion was seen on a two-mile stretch along I-540 through Old Milburnie Road into Raleigh. According to NCDOT, the crash is projected to clear Wednesday evening.
