I-40 eastbound reopens after back-to-back crashes spur gridlock in south Durham
DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) -- Moments after an Interstate 40 crash near Barbee Road was clearing up Sunday afternoon, another I-40 eastbound crash closed all lanes near Durham, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The first wreck closed two of three lanes for about half an hour near mile marker 278, which is the N.C. 55 exit, officials said. All but one lane was back open around 5 p.m., and the scene was clear just after 5:10 p.m. Just before 5 p.m., about four miles to the west at mile marker 274, the exit for N.C. 751, another crash on eastbound I-40 happened. The crash near N.C. 751 closed all lanes heading east. There appear to be three fire engines and at least one ambulance at the scene. The highway was closed at the end of the merge lane for traffic from NC 751 to join I-40. The bridge for the American Tobacco Trail over I-40 is visible in the distance. There's no word on what caused the wreck or if anyone was injured. The Durham Police Department responded to both crashes. CBS 17 has reached out to Durham police for information about each wreck. The second crash scene near N.C. 751 was cleared by 6 p.m.
