‘Help me get my beer’: Hit-and-run suspect seeks alcohol after deadly East El Paso crash

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) -- "Help me get my beer." A witness stated that what 21-year-old Abraham Sosa-Castro allegedly told him at the scene of a crash in East El Paso, resulting in a 76-year-old man's death, according to court documents obtained by KTSM 9 News. As KTSM 9 News previously reported, the crash happened around 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 18, along Loop 275 South near Pelicano Drive. Sosa-Castro was driving when he crashed into the rear of another vehicle, driven by Manuel Oliva Contreras, 76. Sosa-Castro's vehicle flipped over and rolled onto its roof, according to court documents. Contreras was taken to a hospital but later died due to his injuries. According to witnesses in the affidavit, after the vehicle was flipped, Sosa-Castro exited through the back windshield and refused assistance. One witness said she approached Sosa-Castro, who "appeared drunk in how he smelled," court documents read. The witness told officers that Sosa-Castro attempted to turn the vehicle over, trying to get his phone. After that, he ran away from the scene and the witness called 911. It was noted in both witness statements that they took photos of Sosa-Castro allegedly fleeing the scene and sent them to the social media account FitFam. Officers on the scene saw a 12-ounce beer can wedged against the front dashboard and windshield, according to the affidavit. Documents noted that Sosa-Castro ran on foot without rendering aid to Contreras and abandoned his vehicle at the scene. In the court documents, a 911 call was received from a woman who stated that her friend had given Sosa-Castro a ride without knowing his involvement in the hit-and-run crash. The woman stated that she and her friend were at a Circle K around 2:30 a.m. when Sosa-Castro came up to the vehicle window and asked for a ride. He told the women that "he did not know where he was," according to the affidavit. Documents read that the friend dropped off Sosa-Castro and the woman at an apartment complex along Lomaland Drive. Sosa-Castro asked the woman for a ride to Tequilas Discoteque so he could find his friends, but once they arrived, he couldn't find them. The woman drove Sosa-Castro back to her apartment, claiming she would give him a ride home to Fabens in the morning, because she was "too tired." Once at the apartment, the woman began charging her dead phone and received a message from her friend, forwarding the social media post from FitFam about Sosa-Castro allegedly running from the scene. Officers obtained a previous booking photo and matched the subject description provided by all witnesses. On July 8, Sosa-Castro was arrested, nearly 20 days after the deadly crash. He was charged with collision involving death and booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility with a $500,000 bond.
