Greensboro neighbors react to deadly crash on Rankin Road
GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — Greensboro police are investigating a Friday night crash that left a teen driver dead. According to a news release, at around 7:09 p.m., officers attempted to stop a stolen vehicle parked at the Refuel gas station in the 2400 block of East Market Street. The driver ignored the officers’ commands before speeding away, which is when a female fell out of the passenger side and onto the pavement. Officers attempted to pursue the vehicle and found it had crashed in the 1200 block of Rankin Road. The driver was thrown from the vehicle during the crash. The teen was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment, but they died due to their injuries. The female passenger had minor injuries and was not taken to the hospital. Monday, GPD's accident reconstruction team revisited the site of the crash. The crew used devices to scan the road and put up a drone to collect more information about the area, which includes houses, a park and a church. The GPD will conduct an internal investigation to determine whether policies were followed. The officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative duty pending the investigation. “We have a very detailed and restrictive pursuit policy in our department directives, which are posted online,” Assistant Chief Milford Harris said. FOX8 asked the GPD if the department had used the StarChase technology, and Harris said the GPD is aware and looking into the option. “As for GPS technology, we have seen a demonstration and believe it’s a valuable tool when all of the conditions are ideal to deploy it. With any new technology designed for law enforcement, we are researching the benefits, costs and challenges shared by early adopters of it. With the large number of vehicles in our fleet, we would need to examine the costs of implementation in comparison to the effectiveness of this tool," Harris said.
