Girl, 6, killed in crash involving Temple Terrace police officer
A 6-year-old girl was killed Wednesday in a crash involving a Temple Terrace police officer, troopers said.The crash happened about 4 p.m. when a woman driving a Nissan Pathfinder east on East Fowler tried to make U-turn at North Drive, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. While making the turn, the woman entered the path of a Temple Terrace police officer who was driving an agency-issued Ford Explorer west on Fowler, troopers said.The police officer crashed into the Nissan, and both SUVs came to rest in a ditch on the north side of the road.The 6-year-old girl who was riding in the Nissan died from her injuries at a local hospital.The 36-year-old Tampa woman driving the Nissan and two other girls in the car, ages 1 and 8, were taken to a hospital with injuries that troopers said were not life-threatening.The officer, a 25-year-old Tampa man, was also taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, troopers said.The Highway Patrol has not released the names of the drivers or passengers.A statement released by the Temple Terrace Police Department offered condolences to the girl’s family and said the officer was in stable condition.“At this time, the circumstances surrounding the crash, including contributing factors and fault, remain under investigation,” the statement said. “We remain committed to transparency and will provide updates as information becomes available and is appropriate for release.”
