George Foreman's boxing ring at Oakland gym damaged by car crash
The owner of an Oakland boxing club is surveying the aftermath of an incident where a car crashed into the business on New Year's Day, causing damage to a historic boxing ring once utilized by heavyweight champion George Foreman. During the overnight accident at Lightning's Boxing Club in East Oakland, the vehicle also hit another car before colliding with the gym and the driver fled the scene. Co-owned by Kris and Denise Lopez, the gym suffered major damage, with the force of the impact knocking over the ring stairs and pushing the ring out of position. The beloved boxing ring, acquired by Lopez in 2009 and previously used by Foreman, Sugar Ray Leonard, and Wilfred Benitez, was severely affected. Kris Lopez highlighted the costly repairs required and his frustration with crime in Oakland. Despite the setback, the Lopezes remain committed to offering support and opportunities for underprivileged youth in the community through the gym. Many students from Unity High School, who receive a significant discount, frequent the gym. The boxing club serves as a mentorship platform and has produced professional boxers while instilling discipline in numerous others. Kris Lopez, whose own life was positively influenced by boxing, expressed gratitude for the community impact. The couple aims to reopen promptly and is seeking a temporary location during repairs. An investigation by Oakland police is ongoing, and a GoFundMe page has been set up to assist with repair expenses.
