‘Gear shift accident’ causes car to plunge into Port Isabel channel, police say

PORT ISABEL, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A gear shift accident caused a car to plunge into the Port Isabel channel on Sunday morning, police said. The incident happened sometime between 10 and 11 a.m. at Long Island Village along South Shore Drive and Martinez Street. According to a Port Isabel police spokesperson, the driver claims he put the vehicle in park, but the gear was in reverse, causing the vehicle to plunge into the water. The case was treated as an accident, police say. No injuries were reported. The Brownsville Fire Department's dive team assisted at the scene.
