Forsyth Co. Sheriff’s deputy killed | Bryan Castillo appears in court
On Tuesday morning, the suspect arrested in connection with a crash that claimed the life of Forsyth County Sheriff's Deputy Kaleb Mitchell appeared before a judge.Bryan Castillo, 19, of Winston-Salem, is facing multiple charges, including:Second-degree murderReckless drivingSpeedingDriving left out of centerIn court, a judge said Castillo could face life behind bars without parole if convicted of the highest extent of his charges. District Attorney Jim O'Neil said during a news conference Monday that these charges were upgraded to felonies after reviewing the facts of the case.Get the latest news stories of interest by clicking hereInvestigators reported that Saturday, around 6 a.m., Mitchell was on his way to relieve a fellow deputy when his car was struck by a pickup truck at the intersection of Grubbs Road and Highway 311. Investigators allege that Castillo was driving the truck at the time of the crash. The North Carolina Highway Patrol stated Castillo was driving at least 100 mph in a 55 mph zone.
