Former Sac State football player dies in crash, family says

A former Sacramento State football player died after a crash in Kern County, his family announced. The Sacramento State football team identified him Wednesday as former offensive lineman Ivan Garza. His family also identified him as a victim of a crash in a GoFundMe page.The Delano Police Department said a vehicle struck a pedestrian early Wednesday morning as the person was crossing the roadway. Police only identified the pedestrian as a 25-year-old man, who was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, where he later died. The driver, a 32-year-old woman, cooperated with investigators, police said. Garza played at Sac State from 2021 to 2023 after he redshirted in 2019 and his 2020 season was canceled due to COVID-19. He graduated from Robert F. Kennedy High School in Delano where he helped lead the football team to a Central Section Division 5 championship. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Police said it have not yet determined if drugs or alcohol were factors in the collision.
