Former Downey officer charged with reckless driving in crash that left man severely injured

A former Downey police officer was charged with reckless driving after an on-duty crash left a person hospitalized with severe injuries. Mario Valles, 30, was traveling at more than 80 mph when he ran a red light moments before the crash, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. On March 13, 2023, Valles responded to reports of a fight at a nearby bar around 1:45 a.m. While driving to the location, Valles reportedly did not activate his emergency lights or sirens. He was accused of driving more than 80 mph when he ran a red light at the intersection of Lakewood Boulevard and Columbia Way and crashed into another vehicle. The collision left the other driver, Nathan Hernandez, 28, of Bellflower, with severe injuries that required multiple surgeries. On Feb. 27, 2026, the DA’s office announced that Valles was charged with one felony count of reckless driving causing injury.  “Police officers are not exempt from the same laws that all motorists must obey when driving on our highways and streets,” said Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman. “Failing to turn on emergency lights or sirens when responding to a call can constitute careless and risky behavior depending on the circumstances. Accountability applies to everyone, especially those who wear a badge and are sworn to protect the public.” An arraignment hearing is scheduled for March 17 at the Foltz Criminal Justice Center. If convicted, Valles faces up to three years in state prison. The case is being prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Lana Barnett of the Justice System Integrity Division and remains under investigation by the Whittier Police Department.
