Firefighters rescue trapped driver in crash at SE Bridge Road and I-95
Martin County Fire Rescue (MCFR) was called to a collision involving two vehicles on Tuesday morning, where one driver was trapped as a result. The incident took place at the junction of Southeast Bridge Road and the Interstate 95 southbound exit ramp in Martin County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Occurring shortly after 8 a.m., the crash involved a 2026 Cadillac Escalade and a 2020 Volkswagen Jetta. The authorities reported that the Jetta, heading south on the exit ramp from I-95, neglected to stop at the intersection's stop sign, while the Escalade was traveling west on the right lane of SE Bridge Road toward the I-95 exit ramp. The impact of the collision caused the Jetta to be pushed 50 feet west of the junction. The driver of the Jetta, a 49-year-old man from Port St. Lucie, was trapped, requiring firefighters to perform a rescue operation that involved "popping" the doors, removing the roof, and using hydraulic tools to "roll" the dashboard forward. The injured Jetta driver was taken to St. Mary's Medical Center. The driver of the Escalade, a 50-year-old woman from Tequesta, and her 16-year-old passenger were treated for minor injuries. An investigation into the crash is currently underway, with authorities also considering whether alcohol played a part. The road has since been reopened. Tragically, over the weekend, two teenagers lost their lives in another crash at the same intersection, with the FHP attributing the cause to failure to obey a stop sign.
