Fatalities and injuries in I-57 NB crashes in Calumet Park prompt ISP response; lanes now open

The Illinois State Police have officially verified that three individuals lost their lives and at least five others were harmed in several accidents that occurred overnight on I-57 heading north, just below 120th Street in Calumet Park. The northbound lanes of I-57 were finally reopened around 8 a.m. on Wednesday after being closed for nearly eight hours. The initial incident, involving three vehicles, happened shortly after midnight, with a subsequent crash ensuing where a separate vehicle struck three people outside one of the vehicles from the first crash. Sadly, the three individuals hit in the secondary accident lost their lives on the spot, while those wounded were transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The officials have not linked weather conditions to the cause of the accident. The identities of the deceased have not been disclosed. Arthur Thomas, whose daughter was involved in the multiple crashes but remained unharmed, shared with WGN-TV what transpired according to his daughter's account. Emergency responders and tow trucks were present at the scene as of 7 a.m. on Wednesday, diligently working on the cleanup process. The reopening time for the northbound lanes of I-57 at the accident site had not been communicated by the Illinois State Police yet.
