Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash Shuts Down Route 1 Near PA Turnpike In Bensalem

A Philadelphia man has been identified after a deadly multi-vehicle crash shut down a major stretch of Route 1 during the Tuesday morning commute in Bucks County. Julio Ricardo Munoz, 45, was killed in the crash in the southbound lanes between the Rockhill Drive/Neshaminy Mall exit and the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Bensalem around 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 7, Bensalem Township Police said. Munoz had been driving a 2007 Honda Fit that experienced mechanical issues and came to a stop in the middle lane of Route 1, according to police. He exited the vehicle, and moments later, the Honda was struck by an approaching 2022 Kia Seltos, causing the Honda to hit him, authorities said. The Honda was then struck again by a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. Munoz suffered fatal injuries at the scene, police said. A passenger in the Honda was taken to Jefferson-Torresdale Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Video from the scene showed multiple vehicles with heavy front-end damage as police diverted traffic away from the highway. All southbound lanes were closed for more than four hours as crews worked the scene and conducted an investigation. The roadway has since reopened. Police said drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash. The investigation is ongoing. Details about Munoz’s life were not immediately available.
