Fatal head-on crash claims life of baby boy in Amador

(FOX40.COM) — The Sacramento County Coroner's Office identified the baby who died after a head-on crash in January as Issac Wilson Shirley of Jackson. According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 2:08 a.m. on Jan. 24 on State Route 16 east of Carbondale Road due to the dense fog. CHP officials said in a press release that Juliana Aranda, 24, of Jackson, was driving a black 2018 Hyundai Elantra eastbound at an unknown speed, while Sandy So, 33, of Jackson, was driving a silver 2016 Honda Fit westbound, also at an unknown speed. Investigators said Aranda's vehicle crossed a solid double yellow line into the westbound lane. So attempted to avoid the crash by braking and steering onto the shoulder, but was unable to avoid Aranda's car. Following the crash, So had to be extracted from the vehicle by emergency medical services and fire personnel. Both of the drivers sustained major injuries and were transported to a local hospital, including Shirley. However, the coroner's office told FOX40.com in an email that Shirley died on the morning of Jan. 29 at Kaiser Permanente, located in South Sacramento. According to CHP, alcohol or drugs are not believed to be factors in the crash. The collision remains under investigation.
