Fatal crash shuts down Vermont interstate for more than six hours
Interstate 89 southbound has reopened between Exit 2 and Exit 1 in Hartford after a fatal crash.Vermont State Police said the crash happened around 8:15 p.m. Thursday. Gabriel Vestal, of Rochester, New Hampshire, was identified as the driver of a BMW 750i, which was involved in the crash with a FedEx truck near mile marker 4.3. The investigation revealed that Vestal caused the crash, according to state police. He was taken to the hospital for minor injuries. The driver of the FedEx truck, who was identified as Andrew Pott, 36, of Burke, Vermont, died at the scene. While speaking with Vestal, police noticed signs of impairment. Investigators believe he was under the influence of alcohol and other drugs. Vestal was charged with DUI. He is scheduled to appear in court in Windsor County in June. The southbound lanes of the interstate were closed for several hours. The roadway reopened around 4 a.m. Friday.
