Fatal crash on Highway 77 claims lives of two Omaha residents
An Omaha couple tragically passed away following a collision in Saunders County early Friday morning. The incident occurred on Highway 77, approximately three miles south of Wahoo, at 7 a.m. Reports indicate that two vehicles were traveling southbound on Highway 77. The crash involved a 2005 Ford Explorer, driven by 18-year-old Jack Van Slyke, colliding with the rear of a 2023 Mercedes GLB Utility vehicle, driven by 81-year-old John Miller, according to the Saunders County Sheriff's Office. John Miller was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. Sheila Miller, aged 78 and a passenger in the Mercedes, was also taken to a hospital in Lincoln, where she later passed away. Jack Van Slyke sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital. Authorities suspect distracted driving may have played a role in the accident, though responsibility has not been specified as the investigation remains ongoing. All occupants were wearing seat belts, and alcohol is not believed to be a factor. Currently, no charges have been filed, and Highway 77 was temporarily closed in both directions for approximately three hours following the crash.
