Fatal crash near Delray Beach leaves driver dead and passenger severely injured
A 67-year-old man from Boca Raton passed away, and his 66-year-old companion sustained critical injuries on Saturday after their vehicle collided with a tree and ended up in a canal near Delray, as stated by the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office. The incident occurred at 12:19 p.m., when deputies arrived at a crash site on State Road 7, located north of Winners Circle. The driver, Jeffrey Key, was operating a 2021 Porsche 911 heading southbound on SR 7 from Saturnia Isles Boulevard, when the vehicle suddenly accelerated at a high speed, according to the crash report. Key lost control of the car for reasons unknown, veering into the median where it struck a small palm tree. Subsequently, the vehicle crossed into the northbound lanes, crashed through the guardrail, and continued on a southeastern path into the drainage canal. Both the car and its occupants became submerged in the water until they were rescued by bystanders and transported by Palm Beach County Fire Rescue to Delray Medical Center. Despite wearing seatbelts, the driver was declared deceased, while the passenger, Timothy Wilson from Phoenix, remained in critical condition.
