Fatal crash in Mullica Hill claims coach and spouse; family survives house fire
A tragic incident took place in Mullica Hill when an SUV crashed into a house on Banff Drive, resulting in the deaths of a beloved high school coach, Thomas Hengel, and his wife, Lisa Hengel. The crash caused a fire that destroyed the home. Thankfully, the family inside managed to escape unharmed. Sergeant Kurt Pflugfelder of the Harrison Township Police Department mentioned that the vehicle hitting a gas line likely accelerated the fire. The Hengels were well-known members of the community, with Thomas being a retired teacher and coach at Clearview Regional High School. The school district expressed profound sadness at their passing, highlighting the positive impact they had on students and athletes. A fundraiser has been set up for the family who lost their home, as the homeowner is currently battling stage four breast cancer. Community members are coming together to support those affected, with plans to address safety concerns like the need for more fire hydrants in the area. The cause of the crash is still under investigation by the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office.
