Fatal crash in Monterey County involving suspected drunk driver; woman dead, toddler hurt
A tragic incident occurred in Monterey County on Monday evening when an SUV, driven by a suspected DUI driver, crashed, resulting in the death of one woman and injuries to a young child. The California Highway Patrol reported that the single-vehicle accident took place around 5:32 p.m. on northbound River Road near Gonzalez River Road and Salinas, west of Highway 101. A 23-year-old woman was driving a white Nissan SUV when it veered off the road, struck a power pole, and overturned. Inside the vehicle were a 23-year-old woman and a 2-year-old boy from Seaside. Sadly, the unrestrained woman was ejected and pronounced dead at the hospital, while the child sustained unknown injuries and was hospitalized. The driver, identified as Aja Hill from Seaside, was seriously injured and received medical treatment. The CHP determined that the crash occurred due to Hill's intoxication and subsequently arrested her for DUI, booking her into Monterey County Jail. The identity of the deceased woman will be disclosed by the Monterey County Coroner's Office once her family has been notified. This tragic event is still under investigation, and anyone with relevant information is urged to contact the Monterey Area CHP office.
