A fatal one-car crash occurred in Johnston County early Sunday, resulting in the death of a Smithfield man and critical injuries to a woman. The incident took place on Powhatan Road at Pocahontas Trail in Wilson's Mills. The car, a 2016 Dodge Charger Hellcat, was reported to be traveling more than 100 mph when it crashed into a tree and caught fire. Initial reports indicated that there were five individuals in the car, but upon investigation, it was found that only two victims were involved. The driver, Alexis Quintanilla, 28, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the female passenger sustained life-threatening injuries, including burns over 20% of her body. She was transported to WakeMed and later moved to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill. Emergency crews were able to extinguish the fire quickly but spent time extracting the driver's body from the vehicle. The crash prompted road closures for several hours. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol identified speed as a major contributing factor in the incident.
