Fatal crash claims Springfield cyclist on Christmas Eve

Springfield, Missouri - Springfield Police Department reported that a cyclist involved in a collision with a vehicle on Christmas Eve has passed away due to the injuries sustained. The incident took place at the intersection of Chestnut Expressway and Campbell Avenue when 65-year-old Daniel Oropeza of Springfield was riding his bicycle in the wrong direction on Campbell Avenue and attempting to cross Chestnut Expressway. He was hit by a 2012 Chevy Impala driven by 35-year-old Michael Casteel of Nixa. Oropeza was later taken to the hospital with severe injuries and sadly passed away on Dec. 30. The authorities are investigating the circumstances of the crash and urge anyone with information to contact them. This incident marks the 23rd fatal vehicle crash in Springfield for the year 2025, resulting in a total of 24 deaths.
